Offered is a choice of two trains; Tourist Class (basic sleeper) trains that stop in most cities & Premier Classe (deluxe sleeper) trains with air-conditioned sleeper cars. Tourist Class passengers travel in 2-berth coupés and 4 person compartments. Equipped with bunk beds, Tourist Class basic sleeper compartments are converted into suites with hot and cold water from a basin underneath a fold-up table during the day. Communal toilets and showers are available at the end of each coach. Bedding can be purchased from the bedding attendant at R40 p/person. Bringing your own bedding is allowed. Shosholoza Meyl Premier Classe Trains More » Premier Classe deluxe sleeper trains have refurbished air-conditioned sleeper cars with single-berth coupés, 2-berth coupés and family compartments. Communal toilets and showers are at the end of each coach. Premier Classe compartments offer more space than the Tourist Class (basic sleeper) trains and coupés are equipped with two lower level bunk beds side by side and a table in-between. The fare on Premier Classe includes a classy food & beverage schedule served in the Premier Classe dining/restaurant car and Premier Classe lounge car. Starting with tea/coffee at the Premier Classe lounges of the Cape Town and Johannesburg train stations one hour before departure, included are, welcome drinks and snacks, breakfast, four course luncheons and five course dinners, early morning tea/coffee compartment service on request and afternoon "High Tea" in the lounge car or your compartment. Safety & Security on South African Railways Trains Shosholoza Meyl Tourist Class and Premier Classe trains are perfectly safe to travel on, and can even be recommended for families and women travelling alone. Sleeping compartments have both a normal lock and a security lock which cannot be opened from the outside, and the train manager and his assistants take great pride in looking after the well-being and safety of their passengers. People who tell you that 'trains in South Africa are unsafe' have probably never been on a Shosholoza Meyl Tourist Class or Premier Classe train, and are confusing these excellent and safe Shosholoza Meyl trains with the suburban Metro trains that commute around the big cities, which they see adversely reported on South African TV. Rest-assured that the Tourist Class (basic sleeper train) and the high-end Premier Classe and Blue Train services are very safe. That being said, please refrain from walking into the Johannesburg city centre. Johannesburg train station (Johannesburg Park Station) itself is relatively safe and well-patrolled with security guards and CCTV monitoring, but surrounding streets may not be. Kindly arrange a car to pick you up and/or drop you off at the Johannesburg train station entrance.
